“It’s Always Been Like This” is a series of objects made with various metalwork processes and hand-rolled beeswax candles that explore vulnerability around emotional expression, behaviors, and intimacy. The exposed steel filaments with thorns depict the shame and insecurity from expressing repressed emotions that were meant to stay behind psychological walls. The steel rooms containing a 5-chair dining table, representing the 5 members of her family, and a twin bed depict shame within domestic settings as a result of generational trauma and behavioral issues passed down like heirlooms of isolation, pain, emotional distress, and unspoken grief. Sculptural jewelry made from steel and beeswax act as physical and psychological barriers between the wearer and intimacy.
